Last month, researchers at McGill University in Canada reconfirmed what we’ll call the porn paradox: When hooked up to instruments measuring sexual arousal, men and women reacted with equal speed when watching pornographic films.

This raises several questions, including why women are so much less likely than men to consider viewing porn a valuable use of our time. But the type of material used in the study also raises broader questions about the effects of porn on both sexes.

Why people think that rivals are better looking than they really are

IF YOU have ever sat alone in a bar, depressed by how good-looking everybody else seems to be, take comfort—it may be evolution playing a trick on you. A study just published in Evolution and Human Behavior by Sarah Hill, a psychologist at the University of Texas, Austin, shows that people of both sexes reckon the sexual competition they face is stronger than it really is. She thinks that is useful: it makes people try harder to attract or keep a mate.

Dr Hill showed heterosexual men and women photographs of people. She asked them to rate both how attractive those of their own sex would be to the opposite sex, and how attractive the members of the opposite sex were. She then compared the scores for the former with the scores for the latter, seen from the other side. Men thought that the men they were shown were more attractive to women than they really were, and women thought the same of the women

One of the most memorable passages in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels comes when the sojourner Lemuel Gulliver encounters a bevy of Brobdingnagian maidens disrobing. Far from the delightful voyeuristic experience Gulliver might have hoped for, he sees naked giantesses, 12 times human size, as if through a powerful magnifying glass: “Their skins appeared so coarse and uneven, so variously colored when I saw them near, with a Mole here and there as broad as a Trencher, and Hairs hanging from it thicker than Pack-threads, to say nothing further concerning the rest of their persons.”

I think we’re all with Gulliver here. Evolutionary biologist John Tyler Bonner uses the traveler’s horrifying encounter with zaftig beauty to underscore a recurring theme in his new book, Why Size Matters: Big is not always better, and size is always comparative. From the perspective of a unicellular pond-dwelling paramecium, humans are the size of a galaxy; next to the blue whale, we are minuscule. Yet all three organisms, from the single-celled to the gazillion-celled, are perfectly adapted for their niche in our complex world.

You can’t have it all, women have long been told. The price of female achievement, goes the centuries-old conventional wisdom, is loneliness. And modern commentators have taken up the refrain. “The more successful the woman, the less likely it is she will find a husband or bear a child,” argued economist Sylvia Ann Hewlett in 2002. Last year, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd claimed that America faces “an epidemic of professional women missing out on husbands and kids” because men remain unwilling to enter equal relationships with educated, high-powered women. And in the first two-thirds of the 20th century, as women gained greater access to higher education and professional work, such was indeed the case. Women who earned bachelor’s degrees and PhDs were more likely to miss out on their “MRS” degrees than their less-educated sisters.

But for women born since 1960, there has been a revolutionary reversal of the historic pattern. As late as the 1980s, according to economist Elaina Rose, women with PhDs or the equivalent were less likely to marry than women with a high school degree. But the “marital penalty” for highly educated women has declined steadily since then, and by 2000 it had disappeared. Today, women with a college degree or higher are more likely to marry than women with less education and lower earnings potential.

Not so much as some people might want you to think. According to a study carried out for the US Department of Justice, about 1.1% of the sites indexed by Google and Microsoft are “sexually explicit”. Though interestingly, about 6% of searches yield at least one “explicit” site, and the most popular searches yield at least one explicit site in almost 40% of cases, says the study by Philip Stark, a professor of statistics at the University of California at Berkeley.

Of course, if 1% (or 1.1%) of the web is porn - and we’re only counting the “visible” web here, since we must assume there’s a lot more which the search engines couldn’t access or index - then that does still amount to millions and millions of sites.

Los besos, como se desprende de esta obra de Paloma Pedrero, Beso a Beso, pueden ser un rito iniciático a la sexualidad o la consumación tórrida y luminosa de la misma: anuncio, preparación o éxtasis. Decía una de aquellas mujeres que se habían amado, sombría metáfora del dolor: “hay besos que dejan llagas y agujeros en la piel”. Era la queja de una traición, de un beso maldito, el beso de Judas; besar sin amor o pensando en otra. No había otra posibilidad de juego, ni siquiera de frivolidad o encantamiento pasajero. Ignoro cómo concluyó la historia de aquellas mujeres que se habían amado; si su boca o su piel acabó en úlcera y socavón o si recuperaron el sentido jubiloso del beso. En cualquier caso, los besos que propone Paloma Pedrero en su última obra quieren “meternos mariposas en el cuerpo”; besos que elevan a categoría de gloriosa sexualidad la leve anécdota de un ferviente juego. Jóvenes intérpretess (Jesús Blanco, Rocío Calvo, Ana Chávarri, Gemma Pascual, Carlos Pulido y Chema Rodríguez) bajo el mando de una directora, Elena Cánovas, son los encargados de pastorear ese enjambre de mariposas que aceleran los pulsos de la vida y desencuadernan el cauce de la sangre.

The study of masculinity as a specific topic (rather than an implicit element) is not utterly new: work in sociology in the 1980s, cultural studies in the 1990s, and concerns of feminist criticism from much earlier have laid the foundations for studying how men set about being men. Historians have also engaged with the topic, most notably in work on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Medieval studies picked up the chase in the mid 1990s, initially in three separate volumes of essays devoted to the topic (1), and now in Ruth Mazo Karras’s new book. From Boys to Men is the first single-authored volume devoted to the topic of medieval masculinity, and as such it has both a hard task to fulfil and a key role to play.

En periodos de profundas transformaciones sociales, cuando nos vemos expuestos a cambios en nuestra biografía afectiva, las propias creencias y hasta en el sentido de territorio, resulta un extraño privilegio contar con la obra de una intelectual comprometida: la filósofa Celia Amorós. El texto que ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Ensayo, La gran diferencia y sus pequeñas consecuencias… para las luchas de las mujeres, que sería preciso hacer extensivo a todo su trabajo, se inicia con el criterio que le llevó a elegir el título del libro. Lo toma prestado de Alice Schwarzer, que se pregunta cómo es posible que unas diferencias biológicas sirvan para justificar una jerarquía tan severa entre hombres y mujeres. Amorós añade a las consecuencias: para las luchas de las mujeres. Elude conceptos galantes, son luchas y son de las mujeres, y además en plural -no de “la mujer”-. No es casualidad. Amorós nos cuenta una doble faceta personal que va a distinguir todos sus escritos: la doble condición de militante y de filósofa. Miembro del Movimiento del Frente de Liberación de la Mujer, nos relata quiénes fueron sus referencias teóricas: Jean-Paul Sartre, al que le dedica su tesis de licenciatura, para seguir con una tesis doctoral sobre el concepto de mito en Claude Lévi-Strauss; su trayectoria docente, como titular en la UNED (1976), en la que hoy es catedrática de Filosofía, habiendo pasado por la Universidad de Valencia y la Universidad Complutense, o en Cambridge, compartiendo con Seyla Benhabib estudios de teoría política.

Tras un año agotador por el trabajo y la formación de posgrado en recursos humanos pro pane lucrando, avizoré un verano libérrimo, consagrado por fin a la lectura sexológica: Masters y Johnson sobre todo, pero también picoteos en Brecher, Money y el inabarcable Havelock Ellis. Quedó pendiente, entre tantas opciones, un proyecto de relectura de Julián Marías. Empecé a leerle hará unos doce años (al alimón con Laín Entralgo) y tuvo un efecto balsámico de orientación existencial en tiempos recios. Lo traigo a colación porque veo que muchas de las cosas que apuntaba se retoman en el máster y me gustaría repensar sus propuestas. (Qué atrevimiento el suyo, frente al bobo igualitarismo, dedicar un capítulo a la felicidad masculina y otro a la femenina.)

Un poco antes, por seguir con la clave biográfica, mientras estudiaba el COU en Estados Unidos, leí con avidez Men are from Mars, women are from Venus de John Gray. Zambullido en una relación incomprensible con una francesa, y enamorado al tiempo de otra chica que no me hacía mucho caso, encontré en la sencillez americanota de Martes y Venus multitud de claves que no solo me facilitaron el trato con el otro sexo sino que me permitieron entenderme mejor. Una lectura interesada me llevó a ver, más que compartimentos estancos, formas distintas de acercarse a la realidad. Digo interesada porque detecté varios patrones femeninos en mí, entremezclados con otros característicamente masculinos. No me importaba si tenía más de uno u otro tipo. Lo esencial era haber descubierto que existían básicamente esos dos modos, y cada cual tenía su peculiar mezcla (eso que Hirschfeld llamaba intersexualidad, aunque por entonces no lo sabía).

Gay Donor or Gay Dad?

R. described himself as “a man in his 40s, voluntarily employed in the arts,” a situation made possible, he explained, by a private family income. His six-foot frame is fit and slim; his eyes, blue and bright. He dresses in a cultured but casual way, an aesthetic captured in his speech, in which phatic blips like “kind of” or “sort of” are interspersed with terms like “Richter-esque.” As in Gerhard, the German painter.

In an effort to become a parent of a sort, R., who is gay, agreed, 11 years ago, to donate sperm to a lesbian couple aspiring to pregnancy. A few years before, R. became friendly with a woman — white and upper class like himself — through the gay activist world. They weren’t good friends, he said, “just friendly.” The woman had a partner, a middle-class black woman, whom R. knew less well but who seemed solid.

The couple decided that the black partner would become impregnated with a white man’s sperm so that the baby would be biracial, reflecting the appearance of both mothers. They approached R. about being the donor. (Like all the subjects I spoke to for this article, R. asked that I not use his full name — R. is his middle initial.) It seemed like a good fit, R. said. “My life and my family background and my socioeconomic position kind of matched the profile of the nonbiological partner.” R. and the white woman even looked somewhat alike.

Sostiene la antropóloga Kate Fox en su hilarante Watching the english (Hodder & Stoughton, 2004) que el formalismo y la altanería de los ingleses no es más que su herramienta para superar sus problemas de comunicación. La curiosa sección de contactos de la London Review of Books (LRB) parece corroborar las tesis de Fox. La revista literaria acaba de publicar They call me Naughty Lola -Me llaman Lola la Traviesa-, una selección de los anuncios aparecidos en los ocho años de existencia de esa sección, destinada a los corazones solitarios, que permite discernir algunos de los misterios del carácter inglés. O al menos del carácter de los lectores que buscan algún compañero de viaje para surcar las procelosas aguas de la vida.

Inspirada en la sección de contactos de la New York Review of Books, la versión londinense comparte el perfil de sus contribuyentes, educados intelectuales de clase media; pero, según el autor de la selección y responsable de publicidad de la LRB, David Rose, se diferencia en que los anunciantes no desperdician palabras con una detallada lista de sus atributos físicos y los aspectos increíblemente positivos de su personalidad. Bien al contrario, prefieren regodearse con sus defectos. “Hombre calvo, bajo, gordo y feo, 53, busca mujer corta de vista con enorme apetito sexual”, reza un anuncio. “Hombre tímido y feo, sumido en largos periodos de autocompasión, mediana edad, flatulento y con sobrepeso, busca lo imposible”, dice otro. “El amor es extraño; espera a ver mis pies”, anuncia una mujer de 34 años. “Mujer asmática y con varices, 93 años, busca hombre menor de 30 con pulmones para empujarla hasta la oficina de correos en lo alto de la colina”, dice otra. Los anuncios de la LRB “no pretenden necesariamente decir nada en particular, son pequeñas declaraciones sobre el absurdo, breves destellos que nos iluminan sobre la condición humana y sus sinsentidos”, explica Rose.
